Punk as Responsibility, Solidarity as Action

With “In Solidarity”, Canadian skatepunk veterans Belvedere reaffirm a long-standing tradition within punk culture: the belief that music can function not only as expression, but as a call to collective responsibility. Released ahead of their upcoming album "Seven Years of Bad Luck", the track examines the consequences of indifference and the importance of defending vulnerable communities before injustice becomes impossible to ignore.

Inspired by the poem "First They Came", “In Solidarity” frames silence as a political and social choice rather than a neutral position. The song's central message is direct: the erosion of rights and protections rarely happens all at once. Instead, it unfolds gradually, often enabled by the assumption that threats directed at others will never reach us. Belvedere transform that warning into a fast-moving, emotionally charged punk anthem that places solidarity at the centre of civic responsibility. Musically, the track reflects the qualities that have defined the band for more than three decades. Technical precision, relentless energy and melodic immediacy remain central to Belvedere’s identity. Yet beneath the speed and musicianship lies a deeper commitment to engagement. Rather than treating politics as an external topic occasionally referenced in lyrics, the band integrates social awareness directly into its creative framework. The result is a song that feels urgent without becoming didactic and confrontational without sacrificing accessibility.

Importantly, “In Solidarity” arrives at a moment when questions of collective responsibility have become increasingly visible across contemporary culture. Public discourse is often shaped by fragmentation, polarisation and algorithmically reinforced division. Within that environment, the song’s emphasis on mutual responsibility offers a different perspective. Belvedere suggest that solidarity is not simply a moral principle but a practical necessity for sustaining communities under pressure. This perspective has long existed within punk culture itself. Beyond the music, punk scenes have historically functioned as networks of mutual support, DIY infrastructure and collective participation. “In Solidarity” reconnects with that tradition by positioning resistance not as individual heroism, but as a shared obligation. The song recognises that meaningful change rarely emerges through isolated action alone. It depends on people remaining attentive to one another, especially when doing so carries personal risk.

Within the context of contemporary independent music, “In Solidarity” demonstrates how socially conscious songwriting can remain relevant without abandoning nuance or artistic identity. Rather than offering solutions, Belvedere focus on a more immediate question: what responsibilities do individuals have toward others when confronted with injustice? The song ultimately argues that solidarity begins long before crisis reaches our own doorstep.
