“Greed” - heavy rock with hand-crafted intensity!

Today we’ve got something seriously exciting on the table: “Greed” by Mick Combs. Never heard of him? Time to change that.
Known for high-octane rock and electrifying guitar work, Mick Combs delivers exactly what fans of hand-built, riff-driven music crave.
“Greed” opens dark and mysterious, marked by metallic, hammered textures and a gripping bass riff. Moments later, the electric lead guitar erupts, throwing a sharp, soaring wave of sound straight into your chest. It’s uplifting yet heavy, tight yet atmospheric. The bass riff keeps the engine running while the lead guitar steps confidently into the spotlight. No vocals appear, because none are needed. This is pure instrumental storytelling, driven by synergy between bass, drums, and a guitar tone that commands attention.
Even though the riff dominates the rhythm section, it never overshadows the guitar solo. Both elements weave together, creating a dynamic tension that fuels the entire track.
The song closes by circling back to its metallic intro textures, with the guitar reaching its emotional peak before fading into the distance. The mix is remarkably clean: every instrument has breathing room, and every moment feels intentional, showcasing authentic, hand-crafted musicianship.
This intensity becomes even more impressive once you know who Mick Combs is.
Born just west of the Flinders Ranges in Port Pirie, South Australia, he grew up surrounded by lovers of ’70s hard rock: Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple. He picked up the guitar early but truly dove into it in his teenage years, helped by free high-school lessons from Ginger Samson. Mostly self-taught, especially when it comes to soloing, Mick spent years playing in bands across styles: folk, jazz, nu-metal, blues. His versatility shows.

In 2023, he released his debut solo album “The Wizard” - a conceptual project based on the seven deadly sins, originally imagined by his wife Ivy Stone and produced/mastered by Don Douglass. That same year, two long-awaited albums from Mega Queen, the band he formed with Ivy, were finally released after a decade on the shelf.
Mick is far from done: he plans to release one album every year from here on out.
“Greed” is a masterclass in instrumental rock: raw, precise, and fully immersive. Mick Combs shows that vocals aren’t necessary when guitar, bass, and drums tell a story this compelling. A must-listen for fans of electrifying riffs and dynamic rock arrangements.
