Belgian-Moroccan producer Zaatar brings raw rock percussion, distorted vocals and dark electronic patterns together in a club track built on repetition and tension.

Zaatar - “Bahnsteigkante” wastes little time finding its pulse. Zaatar builds the track around a repetitive, immediately accessible beat that feels made for a dark club room. There is something in its relentless drive that brings Berlin’s harder dancefloors to mind: direct, physical and confident, without needing to make a big statement about itself.

The pattern keeps returning, but it never feels entirely static. Instead, the repetition gradually builds pressure. The word “Bahnsteigkante” appears through a heavily distorted vocal, almost swallowed by the electronics. You can just about make it out, but the voice functions as much like another instrument as a carrier of language. Whatever meaning the word might hold, its treatment makes it feel distant and slightly unsettling. Later, an atmospheric synth enters, introducing a melody with an oriental inflection. It adds a different kind of depth to the track without softening its darker character. The beat keeps pushing forward, the dark synth pattern remains in place, and a hi-hat adds another layer of motion. Zaatar lets these elements work against and alongside one another, creating momentum through small changes rather than dramatic shifts. The result is powerful, atmospheric and self-assured. “Bahnsteigkante” draws on the physical force of club music while retaining the rough edges of its rock percussion. Its appeal lies in that balance: the beat is catchy, but the atmosphere stays dark; the vocal is barely intelligible, yet unmistakably present.

Zaatar, a Belgian-Moroccan artist and producer based in France, works across EBM, new beat and post-punk, bringing the sound and attitude of earlier underground electronic scenes into her own productions. Her single “Bahnsteigkante” continues that approach through a deliberately hybrid construction, pairing an electro vocoder with hard-hitting rock drums. The track appears on "INHALE Vol. 2", part of Breathing Records’ compilation series.

Rather than smoothing out the contrast between its influences, Zaatar makes that friction part of the experience. “Bahnsteigkante” is a track that trusts its groove, builds its atmosphere patiently and leaves the listener with a pulse that keeps going long after the individual elements have become familiar.
