A Walk Through Grief, Memory and the Things We Carry With Us

There’s something almost playful about the way “Meet Me There” unfolds. Phoebe Rea opens with a calm vocal, accompanied by jazzy drums and little piano accents that seem to pop up just when you least expect them. Soft backing vocals answer her lines, while a warm, slightly grainy instrumental layer gives the track a dreamy quality. But this isn’t a song that simply floats along. There’s a real pulse underneath it and Rea’s voice has enough strength and confidence to keep everything grounded.

As the track develops, the arrangement gets busier. The piano steps forward, adding a sharp accent before Rea returns with more rhythmic emphasis in her vocals. Then a flute appears, along with what sounds like birdsong. The flute moves between the left and right channels, creating the impression of walking through a forest on a bright, lively day. It’s an unexpected detail, but it fits. The song keeps moving without following a predictable verse-chorus pattern and its melody takes some interesting turns along the way. There’s a lot happening, yet the individual parts have room to breathe. “Meet Me There” feels dreamy without becoming sleepy and its shifting arrangement makes you want to pay attention to what comes next.

The story behind Phoebe Rea "Meet Me There" is more personal. Rea wrote it about her grandfather, who passed away more than three years ago, and the ways she still recognizes him in her own life. A good view, a long walk, a visit to an exhibition followed by coffee and cake at the museum café - ordinary moments that have taken on a different meaning because they remind her of him. She also began to understand how much his death had affected her, after initially telling herself that losing a grandparent was simply part of life. Writing the song gave her space to acknowledge that grief, but it also became a celebration of what he left behind. Rather than dwelling only on his absence, “Meet Me There” is about finding traces of someone you love in the things you do and the person you become. That idea connects with a bigger shift in Rea’s music. Her debut EP, "Anybody Else?", dealt with perfectionism, co-dependence, toxic cycles and self-sabotage. For the music that follows, she wanted to move toward something lighter. She describes this new chapter through the idea of phototropism - the way plants grow toward light. It’s a fitting image for a song that holds sadness and joy together without forcing either one aside. The arrangement reflects that, too: constantly changing, full of little details, but always moving forward.

Originally from Oxfordshire, Phoebe Rea is a singer-songwriter, pianist and keyboard player whose music draws on nu-jazz, alternative and art-pop. Classically trained in piano and violin, she studied at the BRIT School and Goldsmiths, University of London, where she became part of London’s jazz community. Her live performances have taken her to venues including Upstairs at Ronnie Scott’s and Pizza Express Live, as well as Truck Festival in 2025. “Meet Me There” is the first release from her upcoming EP and it gives a good sense of where she’s heading: adventurous arrangements, a strong musical foundation and songwriting that feels personal without spelling everything out.

There’s a lot to discover in “Meet Me There”, from the little rhythmic shifts to the flute and birdsong tucked into the mix. But what stays with you is the feeling behind it. Grief doesn’t disappear; sometimes it changes shape, showing up in a familiar place, a shared habit or a moment you wish you could tell someone about. Phoebe Rea turns that feeling into a song that keeps growing as it goes - and finds a little light along the way.
