On This Track: Midweek Listening #13

Five tracks about trust, attraction, old memories, impossible love and facing the unknown.
Sometimes the hardest part is knowing what to trust: your own instincts, someone else's intentions, or the version of a story you've carried around for years. This week's On This Track Midweek Listening 13 selection moves between those uncertainties. Pen Pin find comfort in having someone on your side, Macy O follows an unexpected attraction, and Night Teacher returns to the complicated history of a small hometown. Maren Davidsen imagines a love that can only survive in another world, while Couch Dog take a song from restless garage rock into darker, more reflective territory.
Pen Pin - “Vampire”

Pen Pin's new single arrives just in time for Halloween, but this isn't a song about being afraid of someone. The Los Angeles indie-pop duo, Jeni Magaña and Emily Moore, use the vampire as a starting point for a song about feeling safe with another person. As Jeni explains, it's about having someone who loves you enough that you know they're always on your team, even when the world outside feels uncertain. The pair met while touring with Mitski and built Pen Pin around their shared love of vintage pop. They write, play most of the instruments, and produce their own music, giving the project a distinctly DIY character. Their upcoming debut album, "PONY UP!", follows earlier singles “Fringe” and “The Boredom”, which lean into a hazy, retro sound. “Vampire” brings a darker edge to that palette, with a title that suggests danger and a meaning rooted in trust. Jeni even connects the song to "You've Got Mail" and the private satisfaction of calling someone close to you after an argument to share all the things you wish you'd said.
Macy O - “Roll With Me Tonight”

Shropshire singer-songwriter Macy O returns to the soul and Motown sounds she grew up listening to on “Roll With Me Tonight”. The track previews her upcoming EP "Soul Searching", due November 27 via So, Let’s Talk / Moose Records. Bass, strings and piano give it a rich arrangement, while Macy's vocals move between control and full-bodied expression. The song is about the uncertainty that comes with an unexpected attraction: whether to stay cautious or take a chance and see where the night goes. It's a familiar dilemma, but Macy approaches it with confidence and a sense of fun. After moving through pop, R&B and dance music in earlier releases, she's now putting the influences of her upbringing at the center of her work. Her 2023 album "Journeys" earned her Song of the Year at the Song Academy Young Songwriter Competition, and her previous EP "RÉPERTOIRE" included “My Desire”, which reached number four on the UK dance charts. With Soul Searching, she's returning to the sounds that first drew her to music.

Night Teacher - “Reckless”

On “Reckless”, American songwriter Lilly Bechtel, who records as Night Teacher, returns to the small Virginia town where she grew up. The song follows an encounter shaped by shared history and the opinions of people who think they already know the story. Bechtel writes about trying to trust her own instincts while working out whether she's afraid of getting hurt or picking up on genuine warning signs. That uncertainty gives the song its tension. How do you get to know someone for yourself when everyone around you already has an opinion? And how much of the past should influence what you do next? Bechtel's music moves between doom-folk, indie rock and alternative pop, with her songwriting often circling around recovery and the complicated process of making sense of experience. Her second album, "Year of the Snake", came out in 2025, following her self-titled debut in 2020. Alongside music, she works as a teacher of yoga, breathwork, meditation and poetry. “Reckless” keeps its focus on a very specific encounter, but the question at its center is one many people know: when history speaks loudly, how do you hear your own voice?

Maren Davidsen - “Dimensions”

“Dimensions”, the focus track from Norwegian singer-songwriter Maren Davidsen's debut album "This Is Where I Leave You", imagines a relationship that couldn't survive in the real world. In the song, another universe becomes a place where the two people can still meet, through dreams, away from the circumstances that made their love impossible. It's a striking way to write about a breakup: not by pretending the feelings have disappeared, but by imagining somewhere they might still belong. Davidsen spent eight years in London before moving back to Norway in 2023 to make room for new music. Her songwriting draws on personal experiences, dreams and the aftermath of change, with Nordic Americana, folk and country influences running through the album. Produced by Martin Vinje and recorded with a full band across studios in Oslo, "This Is Where I Leave You" brings an organic sound to songs about heartbreak and leaving parts of yourself behind. “Dimensions” sits at the center of that story, holding on to the idea of a love that was real even if it couldn't last as it was.

Couch Dog - “Rod Sterling”

Los Angeles four-piece Couch Dog start “Rod Sterling” with the urgency of garage rock before letting the song drift into a darker, more hypnotic post-punk groove. The standalone single is about fear of the unknown, but its arrangement follows a path of its own: the initial friction gradually gives way to something more meditative, with layered textures and group vocals building toward the outro. The band recorded the foundation live as a group before adding those extra details, keeping the energy of four musicians playing together at the heart of the track. Couch Dog originally formed in San Luis Obispo and have since built a following in Los Angeles, where their early house shows helped bring listeners to their 2023 debut album, "How to Ruin Your Life Fast". The record has now passed 11 million Spotify streams, and the band have gone on to play SXSW, complete a national headline tour and headline the Troubadour in August. “Rod Sterling” points toward a darker sound as they work on a second album, expected in 2027.

Other people will always have something to say about who we love, what we should do next and whether we're making the right choices. Sometimes their advice helps; sometimes it makes it harder to work out what we actually feel. That tension runs through this week's songs, whether it's the comfort of having someone in your corner or the struggle to separate an old reputation from the person standing in front of you now. None of these tracks offers a simple answer. Life rarely does.
