Language as Reflection, Time as Atmosphere

With The Words At Play, released on May 22, Michael J. Keplinger approaches songwriting as a form of observation shaped by interruption, memory and emotional distance. Emerging from a period marked by personal and health-related upheaval, the track does not frame recovery as narrative resolution. Instead, it reflects on perception itself — how time, language and presence shift after disruption.

Built around atmospheric art-rock structures, restrained dynamics and introspective pacing, the song unfolds gradually rather than seeking immediate impact. Guitar textures, spacious arrangements and subdued vocal delivery create a sense of suspension that aligns with the track’s thematic focus on emotional inertia and reflection. Rather than moving linearly, The Words At Play drifts between states of attention, positioning atmosphere as a central narrative device. This approach extends into the wider EP project, which combines five songs with five interconnected visual works. Here, music and film do not function separately, but as parallel forms of authorship. As both musician and filmmaker, Keplinger constructs a unified aesthetic language where sound and image reinforce each other’s pacing and emotional tone. This introduces a structural duality. On one level, the project operates within traditions of introspective art-rock songwriting; on another, it reflects a cinematic mode of composition where meaning emerges through sequence, texture and visual continuity. References to artists such as David Gilmour, Radiohead or Nick Cave remain present less as direct influence than as orientation. Like those artists, Keplinger prioritizes atmosphere and emotional weight over immediacy, allowing ambiguity to remain unresolved. The result is a track concerned less with statement than with presence - with staying inside uncertainty rather than overcoming it.

Within the context of contemporary independent music, “The Words At Play” reflects a broader movement toward multidisciplinary forms of artistic practice, where songwriting increasingly intersects with film, visual narrative and self-directed production. Keplinger’s work does not separate these disciplines. Instead, it treats them as interconnected ways of shaping emotional and temporal experience.
