Jordan Klassen - “Crowning Vision”

Bright ’90s-inspired sounds, warm vocals and a restless pop sensibility

Jordan Klassen's “Crowning Vision” opens with a modern keyboard riff and crisp, contemporary drums. The sound is bright, almost playful, before Jordan Klassen’s warm vocals enter. His voice has a processed quality, but it never feels cold or distant. There’s an intimacy to the delivery that sits nicely against the clean, forward-moving production. The melody is easy to get into, and the song has a directness that feels different from the more layered, cinematic sound often associated with Klassen.
The beat keeps shifting in small ways. Vocal sounds become part of the rhythm between the verses, adding another layer without making the arrangement feel crowded. There’s a lot happening at once, but the pieces fit together. The pre-chorus brings in electric guitars, giving the song a sudden lift and a little more bite. They’re gone almost as quickly as they arrive, but that brief change in energy makes an impression. “Crowning Vision” feels intimate and bright at the same time, with a strong pulse running through it. What stands out is how straight-forward the song feels without becoming predictable. The vocals remain warm and close, while the production keeps moving around them. The synths bring a distinctly modern pop sound, but there’s also something familiar in the melody and the track’s alternative edge. It’s a song that seems to reveal more with each listen, especially in the way the different sounds interact.

For the past fifteen years, Vancouver-based singer-songwriter and producer Jordan Klassen has built a reputation around emotionally precise songwriting and richly arranged music. His work has moved through baroque pop, cinematic folk and indie rock, earning him an international audience and more than 20 million streams. “Crowning Vision” marks a deliberate change of direction. The single draws on the sound of ’90s alternative pop and rock, with a rawer, more direct approach than some of his earlier work. Klassen has said that the song came out of a period of experimentation. A new synthesizer, popular in the ’90s, brought him sounds that felt unusually bright and pop-oriented. Rather than returning to the style he already knew, he followed that feeling into something new. There’s a clear connection to the music he grew up hearing on pop radio, but “Crowning Vision” doesn’t come across as a throwback. The production is current, and the arrangement has its own character. The ’90s influence is more of a starting point than a template.
Klassen describes “Crowning Vision” as a song about living in a culture that is constantly focused on happiness and inner fulfillment, while feeling as though those things remain just beyond reach. That idea gives the track a different emotional weight. The music is bright and catchy, but its subject is the frustration of never quite arriving at the feeling everyone seems to be chasing. That contrast comes through in the song’s atmosphere. The warmth of the vocals keeps it personal, while the bright synths and driving beat give it a restless quality. It doesn’t sound weighed down by its subject, but there’s a tension beneath the pop surface. The song can feel inviting and unsettled at once. “Crowning Vision” is the latest preview of Klassen’s upcoming album "Vice Versa", due February 26, 2027. He has described the record as the boldest and most direct work of his career, and this single offers a good sense of what that shift might sound like. The album follows the earlier track “Fall Apart”, which also draws on ’90s pop influences.
There’s a lot to like in this new direction. The melody is memorable, the production has plenty of movement and the guitar lift in the pre-chorus adds just enough edge. “Crowning Vision” feels like Jordan Klassen stepping outside his usual sound and finding something that suits him. "Vice Versa" arrives in February 2027, with a European tour planned for fall of the same year.
